What is the name of your state? Alabama

I had a bankruptcy from a divorce in 1993. In 1997 I got suckered into a program to restore my credit. I was promised they would rebuild my credit by giving me a couple of credit cards. They charged $1000.00 (to be paid monthly) for (one) credit card with a limit of $300.00. They never got the other card issued. This company has been sued for this practice in several states. After paying the monthly payment for several months it became apparent they were not going to deliver as promised. I quit paying the monthly fee. After a couple of attempts to collect I received no further contact. This year I have received letters from a law office threatening me with this debt. This is 7 years later and I have re-married and do not know what to do. Do they have a legal stance to collect this debt? What is my course of action?

"Do they have a legal stance to collect this debt?"
*** Your post isn't clear on when you made the LAST payment. If it was more than six years ago (the SOL for a written contract in Alabama), then the debt is unenforceable and you can use the tolling of the SOL as a defense if they try to sue.
In the interim, send them a request to validate (by certified RRR). A good sample letter can be found at:

Thanks

Last payment was made in summer of 1997. I have downloaded the form you recommended and will send this to the collection agency.

Thanks for your advice
