What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California/North Dakota

Hi, early in this year. Cellphone company have sent me a email regarding the money that owe them.
Back in near end of 2009, I sign them a 30$/mo 2year contract but I breach their contract due to unable to pay them because I lost the job and become homeless.
I wasn't able to pay them all this time until I skip the town taking a big leap to North Dakota...
from 2009 to end of 2014. I was homeless in Los Angeles and I wasn't in a position to pay any debt due to mere survival.
I contact the guys but, they not allow me to cancel the account until pay it off the money before 2012, witch they remove my account anyway.

I stopped pay them in 2010 June, my phone contract was canceled in 2012. They stated that I will be responsible paying all the 2years worth of monthly fee until contract is removed and I let the thing alone until now. I only got back up financially recently this year...

So, bottom line. They want me to pay up this month, or they going to toss to the debt collection company.
There's a lot voice is flying around when I asked this to my co-worker or friends...
Some says something about statue of limitations, witch, I don't know how it works and this case.
Some says I should wait to toss the debt to collection company hope for deduction of money I owe.
Some says just pay up or ask them if they okay with part-pay because I hurting my credit...

I'm probably owe the company at lease 4000$ and I working full-time at entry level job at local burger shop and paid 1000$ a month.
My living expenses is 700$. Also my saving is around 3000$.
If I pay it all now, it will financially cripple me.

So I not sure I've come to the right place but, anyone care to give a advice for best strategy?
Also, I have good credit score(around 700), if they toss it to collection.
How this is impact my credit? Do I get summon to the court for this?
At this moment, I'll be obliged to get any advice regarding to this issue.
