My husband and I paid off a credit card debt. After we had mailed the check, we received a collection letter demanding payment. Both of us have spoken to the company informing them that we already paid the credit card company. They are saying that they are going to continue to pursue this matter until they receive the payment. They want us to stop payment on the check and issue a check to them. We took a second mortgage in order to pay this debt. First, the mortgage company made the check out to the credit card company so it wasn't a check we could stop payment on. Second, the credit card company applied the payment so our account is showing as paid in full. The collection company is not only calling us, they are also calling the mortgage company who issued the check. Can they continue contacting us and the mortgage company when the debt has been paid?

No. Send them a 'cease and desist' letter by Certified RRR. A good sample letter can be found at: www.creditinfocenter.com/forms.
Also, include a statement that if they contact your mortgage company, you will pursue a 'tortious interference' claim against them.
