alabama; we were notified by amrcan expess that our account had not been paid on in two months. now it has been set to a collection agency that says we must pay full amount owed ($2,400) by end of the month. others have told us that if we pay any amount it cannot be held against us. we want to pay the bill, but we don't have $2,400 right now. what recourse do we have?

Contact american express and deal with a supervisor and offer up a certain amount. tell them you are doing this in good faith. the issue here is why it went to collection in the first place.

If no luck there, try consumer credit counseling.
