What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York
My small debt collection agency has to answer a small suit, filed in Federal court, from a law office in CA. We bought a debt file and collected this debtor (paid in full) within 2 weeks of getting his name. We have all the notes, the debt purchase contract etc.. and a friendly email from the debtor asking he he can move the pay date another week, we agreed. Now he claims (looks like boilerplate language) that we called him several times a day, at all hours, for several months (threatening him with jail, etc..) He filed this 9 months after paying us in full! (must have seen an ad or read a chat-room brag from someone who beat a collection agency). I WILL COUNTERSUE if they do not drop case and force me to hire lawyer to answer. I will fight this even if it costs me more than the $3000 they will "settle for" now. What is the Federal Code I can countersue under, for my legal bills?

If you don't know how to respond to a legal matter, then I think you need to NOT be in the business you are in.

Consult with an attorney...or pay what they are asking. It's up to you.
