What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana
During my separation from my now ex husband (have to be separated 1 year if you have children under 18 before a divorce is finalized), he took out a bunch of payday loans in my social security number. I have subsequently been getting phone calls from debt collection agencies regarding these debts. I always ask for something in writing so that I may verify the debts, and have only received one or two written correspondences to which I have made arrangements with and paid the debts (even though the ex did it, it was still in my SS number and going on my credit rating). Now, alot of these companies these collectors say on the phone, I've never heard of. They are 3rd party collection agencies and quote amounts from $500 up to $1200 and want to know what I'm willing to do about it. I tell them I can not verify anything on the phone and want something in writing, and alot of them get very rude and tell me that I can expect to be "served" within a couple of days. All of their numbers are either from out of state or show up as "unknown" on my phone.
I'm not sure what to do. If I can verify the debt is legitimate (in other words, it was actually a loan taken out in my ss number and not some fraud collections company scam), then I will make arrangements to pay the debt off. But how do you deal with these people who refuse to send you anything in writing and harass you constantly about court proceedings, etc?
