My father passed away recently. When my mother and I went to his apartment to collect his belongings, we discovered several items were missing. I found the receipts to a few of the missing items. I have the empty boxes of most of the items that didn't have receipts. The landlord is my father's uncle. He and his sister, my father's aunt, were the only people who had the keys to my father's apartment. The landlord's sister admitted to taking some of the items, but claimed my father wanted her to have them. My father didn't leave a will, but he told me he wanted me to have his things if something were to happen to him. He asked that certain items be given to specific family members. I cannot obey his wishes because they are gone. I called the police and plan to file a complaint against his aunt and uncle, but the police officer told me it was my word againt theirs. Do I have a strong enough case to take them to civil court in order to get my father's things or at least receive some type of compensation? Even if only have empty boxes as proof of the items that they took? I live in New Jersey. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you make the issue one of landlord entering the unit when no emergency repairs where needed . contact your city/county govt center and ask if they have a tenants advocate or some one who can provide for you information about the landlord entering and removing property from the unit .
