I live in Georgia and work in a small wholesale company (only 4 office employees). Last week $430 came up missing from our safe. The office manager believes she may have mistakenly mailed this out in an unmarked envelope. The owner of the company has now gone around to various businesses that we deal with daily and told everyone that will listen that "someone has stolen money from his safe". He never mentions anyone's name in particular...it's just "someone". He even tells this to customers that come into our business. A police report has been filed for insurance reasons and everyone that has contact with the safe has been interviewed by an investigator, except for the owner of the company (even though he has the best access to the safe). He has been known to take money from the safe and "forget" to tell the office manager about it until she confronts him with the money not balancing out. My question is...is this defamation since he is not saying names but is instead saying that it is "someone" in his office that stole the money. We're not even sure that this money HAS been stolen. We are all at a loss over this and want his talking to stop. He now has us suspecting each other and has essentially taken all the pleasure of working there. Since we are such a small company, the people that he is talking to know exactly who works for him, so he actually doesn't need to name anyone in particular to totally embarrass us deeply.
