i recently lost my job. I've found out from former co-workers that my employer is telling them that I was discharged because I stole from them. This is an untrue statement, and they're telling it to everyone. They also claim to have me stealing on tape. This is impossible. Not only have I never stolen from them, this is not the reason I was given for my termination. Is there anything I can do about this? I would hate to think that others would think that I did these things. Should I request to see the tape?(I know one does not exist). in short, is there anything I can do about my former employer spreading false imformation about my termination? I have to live in this community, and there are lies being spread by my prev. employer.

Defamation

If you can prove that the emplyer is making false statements, then you have a valid case in defamation. You could sue for damages, and you could also get a restraining order to have the employer stop telling the lies.
