What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Massachusetts
I checked my credit report yesterday and discovered a default judgment was ruled against me in Massachusetts. The address they have on file was one I used for about a month for billing purposes and then moved. All of my other mail seemed to have made it to my new address, except the attempts to collect a debt and subsequent serving papers. I readily admit I owe this debt. (i flat out didn't realize i never paid if off fully) but the amount seems larger than I recall and apparently my debt collector is a bit of a nasty collection agency who was just sued in a class action suit and appears to take liberties with people's checking accounts. I'd like to get this thing paid off in full as quickly as possible and noticed it's possibile to set aside judgment in hopes of possibly wiping this thing off my credit report. Judgment was handed down in June. I don't even live in that state, so I how can I get copies of papers. Should I make contact with the original creditor, the collector, or a lawyer first? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
