What is the name of your state? California

I defaulted my student "load" starting 1998. During the seven years, i was basically homeless living with friends, and looking for a job... and not able to pay. When i called the creditor, they told me to have an unemployment status. But i could not get it because i was never employed. I do feel obligated to pay the loan back. What is negotiable when you actually have a steady income to pay the loan? Interest rates?? Other fees? Any other angle i dont know about?

I got married 5 years after the default. I do have a credit card with him, but no joint account.
I heard it thru the grapewine that, the collection agency cant collect from my husband's assets. (paycheck, car, house) Is this true?

Get a job and start paying, because they will haunt you forever, no SOL, no BK nothing makes them go away for most people.

California is a community property state, any joint properties could have liens placed on them or seized and sold if a judgment is granted to the creditor. The longer you wait to do something, the worse it is going to get.
