What is the name of your state? California

Can the statement a defendant makes to court at the sentencing hearing make a difference in the sentence handed down? How can a defendant impress upon the judge and his victime how truly sorry he is that he committed the crime? I can't seem to find strong enough words to say to impart how I feel about it....any suggestions?

Sometimes the defendant's statement can make a difference, assuming the judge has discretion to impose a more lenient sentence. The best way to impress a judge is with real remorse.
