I have been living in my new apartment since June and my one year lease is up at the end of June 2001. When I filled out the applications and the waivers, documents like that, I told my landlord that I owned a cat. I provided a description, age, and name also of the animal. This information appears on two documents which I willingly provided to my landlord and the landlord filled out a paper which she signed stating that she was aware of my cat. There was a $150 non-refundable pet deposit, and I would gladly pay it for my animal. Before I left I payed part of the security deposit and the application fee. When I returned a few weeks later to sign the lease, no mention of my cat occured. The lease stated the rent I would pay, and all of the other specifications that usually appear. I again payed more money and I assumed I was all taken care of as far as the prepaid portion. I have now been living here for nearly 7 months, and I just received a notice telling me that I need to pay $150 dollars for my "secret" pet. I never withheld information and my landlord claimed she was aware of my cat. DO I NEED TO PAY ANY OF THIS AMOUNT SINCE MY LEASE IS ALMOST UP, OR DO I EVEN HAVE TO PAY IT AT ALL? This was my landlord's mistake, and it is quite late to request the money now. As I stated earlier, I do have documents from my landlord stating her awareness of my pet. What do I do?
Thank you,
In Distress
