Denial of Application to Rent

my husband and i have been denied of rental based on "no verifiable rental reference" via mail although we have had perfect rental history and had provided all correct contact names and phone numbers for them to seek verification. since they are making a decision on monday(we received our rejection letter on Saturday), it seems to be too late to dispute their claim. Also, we were notified two hours before open house of the desired rental house even though we had called numerous times and left messages inquiring about the house. Because my husband was unreachable at the time, I had to take off work last minute and drive 60 miles to view the house. I would very much appreciate it if anyone can give me any feedback on whether this is just "bad luck", or is there anything we can do correct this problem? Thank you very much. We live in N. Evidently your references were contacted by mail and di not reply. Thus landlord is within his rights.

Is this property covered by any Rent Stabilization Ordinance?

Thanks for the reply. i submitted the rental application on wednesday and was told that they would reach a decision by Friday or the following monday. i doubt if they had attempted to verify via mail because of the time frame. i'm not sure if about the Rent Stabilization Ordinance.
