My 15 year old son was not doing well in the public school sector. Up until last semester, he was a A/B student enrolled in honor courses. He made friends with the wrong type and began to cut school. I disenrolled him from public school one week before Xmas break. I then contacted Calvary Chapel Christian School for enrollment. On 12/16/04, I paid a $400.00 registration/$40.00 testing fee to Calvary Chapel Christian School. I was told that we would not be contacted until after the winter break for placement testing. On the day of registration, I provided Calvary Chapel Christian School with transcripts, shot records, and test scores. I was asked to fill out an application that details who is responsible for the monthly tuition, contact information, address, etc. Also on this application was a preface that explained that the school and its counselors/administrators, should problems arise would work with the parents and the student to help in the transition or adjustment phase. The school contacted me on January 3, 2005 at 11:00am for a 2pm testing for my son. We honored the appointment and he was tested. I was told that it takes about a day to grade the test and compile his classes based on his scoring. A full week went by, no call from the school. On Monday, January 10, 2005 my husband contacted the school and spoke w/Mr Hamilton, principal. He told my husband that he was unable to enroll our son. The reason given was the he had heard that my son expressed a desire not to attend the school, and that his last semester was Fs. It was re-iterated to Mr Hamilton that my son has lost his way in public schools and that is why we had chosen private schooling. Mr Hamilton suggested that my son return to public schooling, bring up his grades, and then enroll. The problem I have with this situation is that the school was informed of my sons problems in public school, and we showed up with transcripts in hand, and there was no prior indication from the administration, nor on the application that my son would be denied enrollment for "a" bad semester. If that is truly the policy of the school, then why did they accept the enrollment fee and testing fee? Why were'nt we turned away on the first day? Why did they string us along for nearly 3 weeks and not communicate any changes or decisions to not enroll until we contacted them? Is it legal what the school did? Can they randomly discriminate? Can they deny a student enrollment because of a bad semester if it is not written policy?
