california. went to dentist 1 day, got x-rays was told i have 3 cavity's and 1 was a possible root canal. 5 days later returned for dental work, they told me before i was called in that now the possible root canal was now a for sure root canal. i told the nurse that i would see a different dentist for the subposably root canal tooth and to only give me the 2 fillings and polishing, she showed me a list of what would be done and the cost which was for 2 fillings and 1 polishing. the dentist called me in, gave me novacain and started working on me and after 2 hours of him working on me, i was asked to come back the next day to finish the work. i went to the front counter and i asked what was done...she said nothing was documented yet and was told to come back the next day and just pay then. i came in the next day they told me that they did a root canal and no fillings on the other 2 teeth. they said they would do the fillings now and crown the root canal. they tried to get me to sign papers for payments and they would not give me copy's of anything in my chart. i did not sign anything and i did not let them do anymore dental work on me. i left and told them i would call them on monday. please help, my mouth hurts i told them not to do this, i'm on antibiotics and pain pills.

Hello msroot

The situation you discribed sounds like a "Failure to Communicate" correctly and prior to the dental work.

You failed to have a written and agreed to conditions, terms and instructions stating clearly what proceedures you wanted done and in what order to do them, etc.

Worse yet, you allowed the dental work to proceed without questioning the dentist prior to having work started.

Chances are what the dentist thought you wanted and what the office thought you wanted, what they each thought you said and what they thought you wanted, etc. where not verbally communicated with BOTH parties in the office.

In this situation, too many errors on your part and a few on theirs, lead to this situation. Happens in a busy office. Many dentists offices attempt to complete 15 hours of dental work per day on far too many patients daily, all in 10 or less hours per day.

What you allowed to happen I am sure or hope you wouldn't allow to happen if you where purchasing a house, a used car, boat or airplane. You got too trusting.

If the work was done under a dental plan, you may have a tiny bit of leverage. But do not get your hopes up.

If not, you basically stuck. Complete the needed work and learn from it. Never enter into ANY blind agreement or contract without having fully read it, understanding it and having a copy in hand....ever.

Good Luck.

the dental assistant even gave me a printout of the cost for me that day which was for only 2 regular fillings and a polishing, she talked to the dentist prior to the procedure and documented it in my chart. when the dentist came in the room he just gave me the novacain and went straight to drilling, maybe i was to trusting i assumed that a doctor reads the chart before drilling away and doing something that people may want to get a second opinion on...but maybe there was a chance that it could have just been filled by another dentist and that's the opportunity i wanted to take....but not now because my tooth is drilled down to nothing with a temporary filling in it! i have never had a root canal before so i really didn';t know what was going on afterall the novacain did do what it was suppose to!

Hello Again msroot

Your certainly intitled to your opinion. However, I respectfully suggest you reread my posting a second or third time, if need be.

What I attempted to show here was only the "Failure To Communicate" point between all parties the exact proceedures you authorized that day and those you actually got.

Saying that, granted, there is always the possibility there was improper dental proceedures taken by the dentist and improper professional office proceedures within the office. However, responsibility still falls in your lap.

It could even be possible you ticked the dentist off mentioning a second opinion. Doubting his/her diagnoses may be the reason.

Worse things could have happened and do happen simply over attitudes {the "I'll show you attitude"} in other cases and dealings throughout lifes adventures.

Basically, all I am saying is it's highly possible you where taken. However, proving it in court may prove to be an impossible task.

A clear case of a communication failure, as I see it.
Or was it the dentists attitude???...:D

Case Closed.
Courts Adjourned.
