I just put down $400 as a deposit to hold a duplex. My question is If I do not sign a lease on this property do I forfiet this deposit? Is there a time limit whereby I can cancel and receive my deposit back? The only thing that I signed was a rental application. I live in Virginia.

Well this will teach you how to read a rental application before you sign it, and most of all DO YOU HAVE A COPY...

i mean for you not to leave the office without a reciept and a copy of the application is foolish

was the $400 a deposit, was it to hold the apartment till it was ready, were you given the keys?

Did the landlord lose any money on you by not renting it

That is really the question.

No, I did not get a copy of the application, I did not sign a lease, I did not get any keys and the property is not ready. I did this less than 24 hours ago.
