What is the name of your state? Alabama

Well I suppose I have some "good" news. I've been AWOL from basic training at Fort Jackson since 6/19/07. I have been calling the deserter hotline pretty regularly since 7/19/07 and today (7/24/07) they told me they had a packet on me. That seems a bit quick to me, considering some people have waited months for their packet. Is this cause for concern? I have already read the advice that once you are told your packet is ready, call the hotline a few more times at varying days and times to be sure you get the same answer. I will indeed heed that advice. I do have a few more questions though. And yes SHORTY LONG I'm sure they may have already been asked and answered, but please...humor me.

1. What is the procedure for getting your packet to Fort Sill? Is it accesible via the computer, or will the people at the deserter hotline have to send it to Sill via mail, fax or e-mail? Is it automatically waiting for you, or do you or someone else have to request it?

2. WORSE CASE SCENARIO: If by chance I was sent back to my basic training unit at Fort Jackson, how could I get out? Would I have to go AWOL again?

3. Now that I have a packet, does that also mean that I automatically now have a federal warrant for my arrest?

4. Because of the short amount of time I've been AWOL should I wait longer to assure that I won't be sent back to Jackson, or is it safe to go ahead and turn myself in?

Thanks in advance for the advice! You guys have helped make this less scarry.

Sorry, no humor today. And no one in his or her [right mind]
will tell you whither to stay AWOL longer. To this regard, this could be
considered a criminal act of conspiracy in assisting you with such!

doesn't always work this way. my husband turned himself in to fort knox last sunday. monday i called and they said they had him. monday night he called home and told me they didn't have his paperwork, and if they didn't have it by wed. he would be there until next tuesday. he called the week before and they said they had his packet. i called fort knox today and they tried telling me he wasnt there. they hadn't processed him and never dropped his warrant. I finally convinced them he was actually there by giving them the phone number he was calling from. thank god for caller id. they then told me his paperwork was there, there was some sort of mixup on why he was never processed. the usual b.s. from them. they promised to deliver the paperwork downstairs to get him inprocessed right away. he called tonight and even though they have his paperwork they didn't process him in enough time and the earliest he will be home will be next tuesday. they screwed up and he is paying for it. maybe it doesn't pay to do the right thing and turn yourself in, they still screw you over every chance they get.

Thanks littehelp & star!

I hope that things indeed go that smoothly. Star, I am sorry to hear the difficulties your husband has had. That's why I'm going to call the deserter hotline many times to make sure the answer stays the same.

Can anybody answer the question of since they say my packet is ready, does that also mean I automatically have a warrant for my arrest now?

sometimes when they say they have your packet, you don't have a warrant. they are supposed to go hand in hand, but it does not always work that way. please do call often. different times of the day and on different days of the week. the army is famous for lying and not following through with what they say they will do. they will screw you over every chance they get. you have to be very careful with them. when you turn yourself in, make sure you have a contact on the outside who will place calls to them to make sure they are following proceedures. they still lie to us civillians, but my husband would never have been processed if i hadn't called for him. believe me, i will be calling tomorrow to give them an earful for lying to him. you are pretty helpless once you are in there. you have no choice but to listen to the b.s. they tell you. you need someone on the outside who can find out what is really going on in case they start jerking you around. which is what they are famous for. good luck!
