I have cancer and I am on Social Security Disability and have been receiving monthly benefits for a while. My question is, am I required to be under a doctor's care the entire time I am receiving benefits? I have been searching for a doctor to continue my treatment for around a year and I am getting concerned that I may lose my benefits if I am not presently under a doctor's care. I know there are several people with cancer who choose to forego treatment. Do they still receive Social Security Disability even though they do not have a doctor? I am very concerned about this and I would appreciate your reply. Thank you.

I really would appreciate anyone's input to my question. It would be a load off my mind if I could get any answers at all. Thanks.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Well, you receive social security to live on. That is separate and apart from medical treatment, although you are receivng social security because you have cancer.

Tell you what. I think you really need help and probably cannot afford an attorney to hire fully.

I will give you lots of resources, but it is up to you to check them out.

1. attorneypages.com
2. your local bar association -- ask for legal aid or pro bono services
3. a law school in your state -- ask a law professor --perhaps the front office can refer you to one.
