Hi! My community just suffered the wrath of Hurrican Ivan. Isn't it a law that mortgage holders and credit card companies have to grant you an extension of payments for 90 days? I did not lose my home but I do work on the beach and my pay has been cut half and will not resume for 4-6 months. Any advice on this subject matter is greatly appreciated!

Contact your mortgage company and see what options are available, also contact FEMA etc. there may be more than one option, such as there may be ways to extend your utility payments and/or access to food at reduced rates freeing up more money for your mortgage, also at least you have a job and employment, things may pick up sooner than you expect, hopefully they will.

We were hit by Ivan as well and when we contacted our mortgage company they said that we could "skip" a payment for October but would have to resume regular payments in November. We will still have to pay for the month of Oct, but later on in the year. As for FEMA...hmmm...we went down and saw the FEMA reps when they were in the area, and they said they would send us a packet of info as well as sending in one of their people to look at our damages...haven't seen or heard from them yet, and it's been almost a month since we contacted them.

In order for creditors to extend payments, you must live in a county that was "officially" declared a disaster area. Creditors verify this by your zipcode (hurricane affected area), and most are willing to work with you. Suffering from the "wrath" does not suffice in itself.

Bamamama, I also live in south Alabama and we too have lost income due to the storm... have lost a week's pay and have had only two paychecks even close to 40hrs (only 1 income in the house due to my illness).

I hate to say this, but even the utility companies wouldn't work with us, and the water dept lost our payment and refuses to turn on the water (shut off for 6 days now) until they find the payment they lost. We have receipts, but they don't care.

I hate to hear of this stuff happening, but it is.

Good luck to you.
