Delaware--one of my managers is discriminating based on our physical appearance. i applied at a restauraunt as a waitress w/ no waitress experience. the manager hired me as a hostess/bus person (i am 19). he said he'll eventually train me as a waitress. that was fine w/ me until a beautiful, tanned, blond w/ short dress girl came into to apply as a waitress w/ no experience what-so-ever, like me. she got hired as a waitress right away, got trained the next day. the manager is still not letting me train as a waitress, it has been 2 months, and said that i definitely cannot bus b/c i am too small and timid. but i don't want to quit. what should i do?

Does this restaurant serve alcohol? Since you are only 19, you are not allowed in some States to serve alcohol and that might be the reason your manager is not training you as a waitress.

Thank you for replying. In the state of Delaware, you must be 21 to be a cocktail waitress, but you can be 19 to serve as a regular waitress. I also have my ABCC license so I can serve in a restauraunt. What dd oyou think? If you can, please reply. Thank you so much.

I think you should keep after your boss. Do it nicely. Ask him why he is taking so long to start your training. You can tell your boss that you need more money and as a waitress you would have a better chance of making more money.

Sometimes a person is hired for a certain position and because they are extremely good in that position, when a chance comes along for a "promotion," the boss does not want to promote that person because they are more valuable in the position they hold now.

If he still does not want to train you, then you will probably have to go elsewhere. When/if you do go somewhere else, don't say you haven't any training as a waitress, just apply for the job. Every restaurant has a different way of doing things. They would show you their way, which would be "training." The only thing I can see about being a waitress is getting the orders right the first time, not "disappearing" after delivering the orders to the customers and making sure you are not "stiffed" for the check. You already sound like a pleasant person and as far as "timid" goes, given time dealing with the public will sure change that fast!

Thank you buddy2bear! Actually, I did talked to one of a different manager, and she did say that "she wanted someone who knows what they are doing in the summer when we're busy", so I sort of got stuck w/ my position for the summer, like you said. But the good news is, there's another restauraunt in the same complex(same owners) who are willing to train me as a waitress this comming Saturday. :)
I'm so happy. And I am still keeping the other job.
Thank you so much for writting me back.
I really appreciated it.
