i recently obtained an attorney for a child custody/support issue. i retained them for $2,000 and explained that's all i had. Their contract states they will do interim billing in the event costs exceed the retainer. I received an invoice for an additional retainer of $1,500. After speaking with head partner, he informed me that all monies were used and as of this date i need to send an additional retainer in order for them to continue on case (which was just in the final paperwork signing phase). I explained i didn't have the money and would come get my paperwork and finish the paperwork myself. The next day i receive a call from paralegal stating i was incorrectly billed and that, in fact, i owe $1,998. that my hours were mistakenly billed to someone else by bookkeeper. after explaining i have no more money, i will get the papers to finish,i then receive additional bill for $245 that the attorney went to court to file the papers! three in the firm knew i did not want any further services after the $2,000 retainer fee. What are my rights on this disputed bill?? MryB.
