my best friend is seeking a divorce from her husband. before her marriage he was an illegal alien. because of their marriage, he has been able to obtain lawful work and has flourished into a high paying job. without getting too much in detail, her husband is abusive.
she has a letter in his own writing (although he didn't sign it) to his "girlfriend" stating that he is married to her only for his papers. she also has other evidence that their marriage is a fraud (on his part).
because of the lifestyle and the debt that they have incurred because of his great job, she is asking for a financial help for a year until she can get back on her feet as a part of their divorce agreement. she obtained an attorney and he told her that she wasn't asking for enough, that she could get more, but that's all she wanted.
her husband refuses to agree with any of it unless she agrees to help him with his papers (he has 1 week until they expire). she and i see this as blackmail. her attorney says she is being emotional and is threatenning to withdraw from the case because she isn't looking out for her best interest.
if she signs his papers she continues to be his sponsor for 6 more years, to the point where if he defaults on so much as a credit card, they can come after her.
he has told her in front of her attorney that he will do "anything necesarry" to get his papers. he will get an attorney and make this whole process drawn out and expensive (she has 13 yo twins, she can't afford a lengthy process).
what can she do?
