What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington

My ex and I were legally separated in North Carolina two years ago. She moved back to Poland and I moved to Washington state. We are both wanting for this to be finalized and it will be uncontested with no children. I went to the courthouse and was told that i would have to go back to North Carolina to finish divorce because she has never lived in this state. This seems very wrong to me. Did i get bad information? Any advice would be welcome. thank you

I suggest that you get a consult with a local attorney. I suspect that you will need one to get the divorce accomplished. I do think that you got bad information. If you both want this to be finalized I think she could accept WA jurisdiction to allow it to happen. Again though, I think you are going to need an attorney.

Thank you for your reply. Of course, we are hoping to avoid getting another lawyer. I definitely spent a lot on the legal separation.
Since we are both willing to do this without kids or disagreement i was hoping to do all of the filing myself.
Reading the info on the state site, it says that only one person has to be a resident in Washington to file here. This is where my confusion lies.
Thanks again and if anyone else has had an experience similar i am open to any other info.
