Is Michigan a community property state? If so, what exactly does that mean, and if not, what happens to common property in a divorce? As a stay-at-home mom for 5 years while my husband went through medical residency and fellowship, what am I entitled to regarding his income which is now significantly higher than before? Am I entitled to some kind of spousal maintenance or alimony only until I find a job or could such support be indefinate?
Thank you very much.

My response:

Your questions, while easy to ask, are very difficult to answer in just a few paragraphs - - reams could be written in order to respond to you. There are too many factors you have left out of your post in order for me, or anyone, to be accurate. As one example of the complicated nature of your questions, and insofar as the medical degree is concerned, there are many court cases just on that one subject alone.

Therefore, it would be in your best interest to contact a local attorney in your area by choosing an attorney through your Yellow Pages or through your State Bar Association. Most Family Law attorneys will give you a FREE initial consultation, and thereby, be in a better position to answer your questions. Then, you and your attorney could plan the best strategy for your particular situation.

Good luck to you.
