What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Chicago
My friend and his girlfriend (both from 2 separate asian countries) are Green Card holders in U.S. and live together in US. Last year, they went to Vietnam, the girl's home country, and went through a social marriage. But no marriage registration in paper took place. They now live-together in US. Recently the girl is planning to end her relationship with my friend. My question is : Will there be any paperworks invloved if they plan to separate or divorce. I know that since they only live together in US and never got married in US, there is no paperwork needed in US. Will the same conclusion hold for Vietnam as well ?

The US automatically recognizes all legal marriages that took place in another country. Therefore, if Vietnam would consider them legally married, then the US would consider them legally married as well.
