What is the name of your state? Wi
My friend who has not lived with her husband for 16 years never divorced or filed any papers
he lives in another state. She is on SSI and can't afford an attorney
What is her options ??? Can she file divorce papers herself, and what are the cost?
After this many years, does she legally have to file for a divorce,what is the cheapest way?

She can apply for legal aid. She can go pro se.

Can she file divorce papers herself,

Yes.

and what are the cost?

Call the clerk of courts for the county she would be filing in and have her ask.

She doesn't have to file for divorce but if she is not granted a divorce she will still be married.

VL - my favorite is the folks that go through the divorce and then don't file their final papers or do not follow up to make sure they receive the decree marked final back and then years and years later - they sign on here and want to know how to find out if they're divorced...Courtclerk says it happens all of the time!!
