a friend of mine is a u.s. citizen. he went to canada about a year ago and married a canadian in august. they moved to texas in february. he now wants to get a divorce. how can he get a divorce and does it have to be done in the states or in canada? any advice would be helpful.

My response:

It doesn't matter if he was married on Mars. As long as the marriage was legal where it was performed, any State in the Union will recognize that marriage. As long as the residency requirements, and separation requirements, have been met in Texas, he can get a divorce right where he lives.
