I have been in CA off an on since 03 and have bought several cars and registered them here since, yet i have a Pickup i bought new 11mos before i came here first and worked a job here, i went home sold my house there and made my permanent residence here in Ca in spring of 04.

I had registration paid in my other state for two years and upon visiting DMV i asked about registering my truck here and was asked about my expiration of my current Tag and they just politely stated that i can get my new tags when they expire, and i had to have my truck weighed for the costs of the registration, since it's a diesel.

So i visited the DMV and upon obtaining Ca registration and being Honest with them about when i entered CA and started working here, they proceeded to back charge me since that time frame and i'm being told i have over $4100 in fee's and charges to get my truck current and registered until Aug of 08. now that my Vin and truck are in the system am i stuck paying their fee's and penalties. Had i known that they would charge me anyways, upon their polite advice of, "when your current tag expires you can switch registration." I think this is a sham and I just want to know if there is a way to get the fee's reduced or eliminated? I mean this is a truck i've owned free and clear. I just don't know why every vehicle has to be registered here, how can i justify this vehicle, since i have 4 others since settling down here in Ca.

Thanks for any insight.
