I am in Kansas. I entered into a verbal contract with a coworker to proofread a manuscript I wrote (at home on my personal computer), my aim being to publish. I told her it was for her eyes only twice, and the folder had instructions that it was not to be copied or distributed.
This worker decided my fictional story constituted insubordination, turned it over to the company accountant who made copies for himself and send some to the corporate lawyers, then fired me for 'attempting to incite discontent and stir up trouble.' I asked for him to give me the copy he had on his desk in front of witnesses and he refused. The company is challenging my eligibility for unemployment and has sent copies out to this agency as well. Because of this I have lost my current income, future income, bonuses, insurance benefits, unvested 401k contributions, possibly my unemployment benefits, and my family has suffered great emotional strain. Do I have grounds to file suit against this woman and the company for copyright violation and recover compensation for damages directly related to this violation? What is my first step; copyright registration or find a lawyer?
