By registering variations of a copyright, you are doing what is called 'cybersquating" (simply, using a property of someone else as if it were yours).

There are numerous court cases where the 'cybersquatter' was required to release his registration. For example:
"In what may be the largest award yet under the ACPA, a federal judge in Pennsylvania ordered John Zuccarini on October 30, 2000, to pay the maximum statutory fine -- $100,000 per domain name -- to Electronics Boutique for registering five domain names similar to the retailer's trademarks."

What if he has them with future plans to have a "fan club" or something? Is it really a copyright violation to have a website with a similar name if the object is not to make money or publish false info?

Let me answer it this way...
Are you willing to risk HUGE legal fees to assert your claim that you might have "future plans to have a 'fan club' or something"???

If so, certainly hang in there... and get a good high-priced attorney, since you can count on Rolex having one (or several) if they decide to enforce their rights against your infringement. Heck, it is possible that after you spend $10's of thousands of dollars... you might win. But caselaw doesn't show that you would.
