What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

Ugh. last friday son's school told me that 17 year old (in one month) was caught smoking pot off property. I was mortified and HAD NO IDEA !!- small amount, was cooperative with school and resource officer wiht names, etc. They gave him a notice to appear in court for a "violation" said he should plead "not guilty".I don't understand..we all know he is guilty. is this just a law thing? They said he pleads not guilty and then goes to another hearing before prosecuter. I did call for more info...said no jail time for first offense and small amount, but what else will happen. Do I need a lawyer for this (school says no) I want my son scared straight also.. am calling PINS programs, cops for tour of jail, etc. plus he is now tied to me at the hip..

do I need a lawyer?
why does he plead not guilty
can i influence the court in any way to give him community service, or some kind of "punishment or will they do that? Otherwise I will do it on my own. THanks

You don't need an attorney but your child should have one AND your child should be responsible for paying EVERY DIME incurred due to this.
