I am considering a legal career but before I spend any more time or energy researching this option, I'd like to know if a criminal conviction disqualifies one from practicing law. I was convicted of a misdemeanor stemming from non-payment of child support when I was younger. I have since paid all arrears and have otherwise fulfilled all of the terms of my probation. Would my criminal history pose a problem getting into law school or joining the bar (I currently live in California)? Thank you for your time.

It would probably depend on your past crimes and how you handled it. I don't think it is an automatic bar. Law schools and or the Bar examiners may probably be looking to see if the applicant has demonstrated rehabilitation and the respect for the laws over time, again probably depending on the nature and seriousness of the crime. I would suggest that you contact each of the schools themselves and the Bar to see what their policies are in handlind applicants with respect to past criminal history.
