While renting a single family dwelling(house), I recieved a water bill in excess of $500 for one month. I later discovered the reason was that a water line in the yard had ruptured causing a leak. Is this my responsibilty or the landlords? After all, it was his pipes that were defective!!

You should only be liable for your average monthly usage. The water company may abate some of it as they should have notified you of the excess usage. L should pay for the difference and the pipe repair.

Depending upon your lease agreement, should be LL's.
