I live in Arizona. Seven months ago my lhusband agreed to watch a dog for a friend of a friend who temporarily had nowhere to keep it. He was informed it would be for about 2 weeks to a month and that the person would bring food by for the dog. Well, the person only showed up one time to visit the dog and did not bring food. So for the past seven months we have been taking care of this dog and considered it ours since we felt the owner "abandoned" it. Well, the #@#&& showed up at our door yesterday demanding the dog. After heated words we ended up turning the dog over to her as we thought we had no rights since she is actually the registered owner of the dog. We and our daughter are devastated that the dog is gone since we became deeply attached to it. I know now that we should have stood our ground and not turned over the dog, but what's done is done and I have to pursue other ways to get it back. So, we are considering filing a civil case against this person for either reimbursement of monies spent on dog or return of the dog. Where I am needing assistance is with regard to what would constitute "abandonement"? The other party claims we agreed to watch the dog "until she was ready to get him" so she did not abandon him. This is not what occurred and there was no written agreement to this. Instead of filing a civil suit is this something the our local police could help us out with (go to persons house and call police from there and ask that party return dog??). I would appreciate any assistance. Joanna.
