What is the name of your state? Maine

I have a DUI in Maine. Now I have my license back. When I go to the store to buy beer they sometimes take my license and while looking at it they punch numbers into some kind of computer. What are they doing with my license when they punch numbers into the computer? Isn't that a tad unecessary? Could they be stealing my personal information?

thanks!

Thank you for answering my question, even though it may seem a little ridiculous.
I still don't see why they are entering my birthdate into a computer when I buy a six pack.

Even when it's not a state law, many point of sale terminals require entering the purchaser's birthdate. First and foremost it's supposed to make sure that the cashier actually looks at the ID (of course at my local grocery, they often take one look at my 50+ year old gray hair and just punch some invented date in without asking for ID). The other is given the average intelligence of the checker, they can't figure out if your 21 without computer assistance any more than they can make change if the register didn't do it for them.
