Are communications between individuals subject to copyright? If I write a letter to someone, or they to me, can I later claim a "copyright" on these communications to prevent their publication?

It seems to me that I've read memoirs where private communications between individuals were published, sometimes over the objections of the author of the communication(s).

Can I also assume what ever the answer to the above is that the same reasoning would apply to e-mail and Instant Messenger conversations?
