What is the name of your state? vt since no one has answered my question yet from my first thread, let me ask this. Can a stepparent legally sign school registrations, emergency forms, medical and such without notifying a non custodial parent? my thread of schools responsibility tells all of what I went through. Can I as a non custodial parent ask that dad signs, not her, and that I am notified if dad cannot be located as a second person before the stepmom??? thanks faith

Stepmom has NO legal authority to sign anything pertaining to your child which requires that a parent/guardian sign. What you can do is ask the school to void anything that is signed by stepmom as she is NOT the child's legal guardian/parent.

I went through the exact same thing- (I have joint physical and legal) what I did was send a letter to the school principal and superintendant of the district and informed them that only her father and I were to sign anything related to school (outside of homework completion) - I also told them that if they accepted a permission slip sugned by anyone other then her parents, and God forbid something happen - I would hold them legally responsible. I have not had a problem since - BUT I also did send a letter to her father teling him that she (step mom) has no legal rights to sign such things.

Also - request that the school give you a copy of the emergency notification, medical and all forms filled out and sent to the school.

I would recommend having the school make official copies of EVERYTHING in their files, and THEN replacing those items with ones that are filled out properly.

You'll need those copies later.
