I finally did get a hold of my FIL's (father-in-laws) step-mother and she said she would not tell us what nursing home my FIL is at and that she has instructed the nursing home, as POA, that we are not allowed to see him or know if he's there and the nursing home is abiding by her orders.

Does the step-mother have the power or legal right to prevent my husband from seeing his father?

These are questions best left to your attorney, but I would think that you can get a court order mandating that the nursing home allow visitations.

As POA, step-monster has the legal right to do this.

Now, for the good news, I read your other post. The reason you stated denial is baloney. Preventing your hubby from seeing his father is a symptom of Elder Abuse.

As Betty recommended, call nursing homes. However, do not ask the nursing homes if your FIL is a resident there, which will get you no where.

Ask the person who answers the phone to transfer you to the room of .... (name of FIL). That person will have to look in the resident directory and either transfer you to FIL's room or tell you he's not listed in the nursing home directory. :D

Your hubby does need to see a guardianship attorney.

Good thinking, Blondie.
