I'm writing this for a friend in Kentucky who has an extremely verbally and emotionally abusive mother. He wants to leave, but is unsure of his options, I had no solid advice to give him, so I'm hoping that you can provide me with some accurate information. He is 17 years old and is seeking to either emancipate himself or runaway. What are the laws in Kentucky surrounding either of these actions? And how can I, as his friend who is aware of his situation, be most helpful to him. Thanks.

Tell him to 'suck it up' until he is 18. At 17, if he can't take a little alleged 'verbal and emotional abuse' at home for a few months, he will have a really tough time in the real world.

Running away is never a viable option.

The state of Kentucky does not have a statute for emancipation.

That is correct. However, the issue of judicial emancipation in Kentucy was set in Carricato v. Carricato, et al., 384 S.W.2d 85 (1964).
