I need to know what previous employers can legally say when a potential employer calls for employment verification? I believe one of my previous companies is badmouthing me to potential employers but I don't know how to prove this.
In January, I put in my 2 week notice with this employer. The next day, my manager said he was terminating me and 5 others due to reorganization even though I had put in a 2 week notice. I wanted it on my record that I had quit but he said it is better if it is this way in case I ever wanted to file unemployment which I never did because I got another job pretty quick after that.
Anyway, is it legal for this previous employer to say I was terminated?

Anyway, is it legal for this previous employer to say I was terminated? Yes, because you were. They chose to let you go before the end of your resignation period. Saying you were terminated does NOT mean that you were fired because of some sort of misconduct though. In this case, you were terminated because your position was eliminated along with four other people.

If contacted for a reference, your employer may provide any information that is factually true and/or represents their honest opinion.

EVERY time you leave a job, that's a termination. A quit is a voluntary term.

Your employer may say anything that is true, that he honestly believes is true, or that represents his honest and supportable opinion.
