I was proposed to 2 1/2 months ago before my family and was given a ring. 1/31/01 my fiancee said he decided he wanted to be alone not married. The ring is not paid for. He says the ring is his, I still have posession of the ring. By Texas law is the ring legally his? I was under the impression if you were given something it was yours. If I kept it, would that mean I would have to make the payments on it? He has made several payments on it and he did sign his name on the jewelry store agreement plan. If the ring is legally his, then I will certainly return it to him, as he has written me that if I do not return the ring, he will take civil action. I have learned this seems to be this man's action in every relationship. I desire only to show this man that his actions are not without consequences. Although if it is going to cost me financially, then it would be of no purpose. The ring cost approximatley $3000.00, it has no sentimental value nor monetary value to me. The lesson this man should learn is of value to me. Thank you for your time.

As a general rule, the person who was 'left at the altar' so to speak, can keep the ring. However, as you have pointed out, this ring has no value to you (either sentimental or monetary) and you have no reason to keep it.

I would suggest that rather than keeping this fight going and causing further anxiety and anguish, why not just return the ring to him??? And be sure to get a receipt when you return it.

In fact, if you want your 'pound of flesh' include in the text of the receipt something like, "I am returning this ring solely to get your deadbeat ass out of my life...." blah, blah, then get him to sign the receipt.
