We are a family ministry with an outreach production in the works. What steps do we need to take to become a non-profit organization? And seriously, is it necessary to hire an attorney or just deal with a lot of paperwork?
We need detailed instructions in basic language that anyone could understand.

The point of non-profit status would be for donation purposes so that we can give receipts for write-offs which will help people feel more comfortable about giving to our efforts.

Visit your friendly reference librarian and ask for help finding books on incorporating a business and applying for 503(c)(3) status from the IRS.
