I signed a 1yr. lease in Oct.2000, it is now almost April 2001. I asked my landlord to give me an extension on this months rent and I would pay him with two installments on the rent. He said if he didn't have the rent on the 1st of April in full, that I had to vacate the permisses on the 15th and he wouldn't go after me for the rest of the lease. I only have 16 days to find another place. Can he do this?

You didn't mention what state you are in, but it sounds to me that he is being pretty generous to you: Failing to pay the rent, if you vacate in 1/2 month, he will not go after for the rest of the rent due under the lease.

Since he is telling you this before the rent is due, perhaps he is trying to motivate you to get the full rent together by April 1.

Otherwise, although it may take him longer than April 15 to actually get you out, he does not have to give up going after you for the rest of the rent under the lease.

Do I understand that both you and your father are separately behind in the rents and (separately) being evicted?

For your info. I am not yet behind on my rent. I just wanted a week or so extra to pay him.

I am trying to warn you ..in case the landlord throws a temper tantrum and acts like a low life redneck, for even being ONE DAY late.
