What is the name of your state? California

I am currently going through a break-up from a long-term relationship with a man. He has implied that if I go through with this, he will send sexually explicit photographs of me to my work and co-workers. I work for a public agency and am myself a public figure to a minor degree so this action could cause deep repercussions. If he follows through on this threat, what is my recourse?

Do the photos exist? your heading implies he will make up the photos.

If the photos do exist, you should consult with an attorney about obtaining a restraining order against your ex to prevent distribution of the photos and to file suit to obtain the photos and negatives.

Yes the photos do exist. He has sent copies to me via email, so I know he has them. If I proceed with hiring an attorney, what law specialty would I be looking for?

Actually, it's impossible to say what the best way to handle this would be without seeing the photos at issue. Depending on their actual content, there could be a number of different avenues to persue.
