This may be too late for anything to be done about it, BUT:
I was engaged for 2 1/2 years to someone who I thought I would grow old with. Alas, his aspirations proved too different from my own, so we had what I consider an amicable break-up. We had accrued debts stemming from house bills (oil, electric, etc) as well as credit card bills, which we lived on (food, clothing, etc) after a cross-country move from CA. I even transferred some of his CC debt onto my cards due to a lower rate. When he left, he took 2 of the house bills, promising to pay them, in addition to sending me money each month to help with the CC bills. He sent a couple hundred in the first months, but then got a new girlfriend who refused to "let" him send anything further.
Now it's been approx. 4 years and some of the bills I have been delinquent with have finally caught up to me - we're talking over $20,000 worth - and my question is, if we lived together when these debts were incurred, are both of us responsible 50/50 for the debts? My name was on many of the bills, but both our names were on the rental agreement for those years. My vehicle also has both our names on the registration, and he refused to sign it over, so I'm stuck not being able to sell it!
