I live in North Dakota and my girlfriend and I moved out of our apartment in June. Three months later we got a bill in the mail for fixing the stove. We got our deposit back in full in June. My understanding was that all responsibility for repairs stopped when we got our deposit back. The North Dakota Renters Association has been no help since we are not a low enough income household. Anyone go through this before? Are we liable for repairs 2-3 months after moving out?

You got your deposit back in full.

A bill is a bill, send the landlord a letter stating something to the effect of

"We completed our lease in full, no damage to the stove was noted on our move out inspection and no deductions were made from our security deposit which was returned in full."

If the landlord sues you that is your defense.

You don't need a lawyer.

May I ask: Did you damage the stove?

Not to my knowledge. I am the one who cleaned it before we moved out and everything was working fine. I believe they said it was the hinges where you lift up to clean under the burners. The bill is only $65.00 and they are threatening to send us to collections over it!

BTW how old was that stove? If it was not new ( less than 5 yrs old) let the LL take you to court and prove that you damaged the hinges. ( very curious here , is the stove a bare bones basic model with five letters in its name ?)
