Ex-roommate responsible for security deposit?

My roommate threatened me both physically and my property, so I called the police to file a report, but all they did was make him leave for the night. My girlfriend and I don't feel safe, and we have three months left on lease. If we break lease, will we be held liable for security deposit and any other costs, or do we have a strong enough case against him in small claims? What kind of evidence do I need or reports filled out? Do I need a restraining order? Thanks.
