Hi I live in SW Washington. I have a question. When my ex boyfriend and I split, he left some of his belongings at my residence. Later in time I had to obtain a restraining order against him which stop him form being on the property. I adjusted the restraining order for him to be able to come get his belongings at a set time(agreeable to both of us)for the removal of his stuff.

I still rent the same house we lived in and he still keep laying one excuse or another why he can't or won't come and get his stuff. I have stored his belongings for close to 4 years now and would really like my garage space back. We have 2 boys together so I see him every other weekend.

Is there anything I can do legally or a time limit to when the property becomes mine so I can dispurse of it myself?

Thanks

You have to check your own state law here.

Some states require that you store his stuff for a period of time (you are long past that) and he has to pay for the storage to get it back. Other states do not require that you store it at all. Even other states, including California, require that you hold a public auction (if goods are worth more than $300) and return the money to the owner after subtracting cost of storage and costs of the sale.
