I was paid $65K by my insurance co.for weather damages to my building.(texas_)I signed a contract with a contractor for the repairs.I needed foundation repairs, which was not cover by insurance. He hired a foundation co. to do the foundation, and use money from the insurance to pay for it. The contractor first said that it would cost $11K for the foundation work, and I would have to pay $5500 for my share. I gave the foundation co. a check for $2750 when half the foundation work was done. When they were finish the total cost came to over $25K.
I ask why so much. He says the they had to do
many other things like pier/beam work. It's a two story building. With the rest of the insurane money he just replaced two roofs. One on the main building and a garage.
I ask for a detail billing from him on all
work done. He showed me a break down on it.Even had his contractors profit listed.
Can he also make a mark-up on this foundation work?
What I like to know if I can get a detail bill from the foundation co. , since I did
pay him for some of the work. I have aready asked him, but he refuses.

Do you have a separate contract for the foundation work not covered by insurance? If so there should be a provision for change order approval and acceptance. What construction contract method was the initial cost based on ie. contractors stipulated sum, cost plus, design-build, guaranteed max not to exceed etc.? Request in writing an itemized breakdown of this work. File complaints against both contractors with the State Contractors License Board. Was there an architect or engineer on site to observe the work? If not, you may need to hire one to review the construction to see if the work is estimated at the ammount that was billed. He can charge for overhead and profit, and it would seem that this is what he in fact did, based on the increase of double the initial cost.
